Contrast

It started like any other news report. The police had arrested a suspected murderer. But then something happened that threw me off balance...

In the report, a girl who had witnessed the incident was interviewed. She made eye contact with the arrested person and became sad when she realized they were about the same age.

She thought about how different their lives were—she with her dreams of the future, he with handcuffs and an uncertain existence.

"He might end up in prison and I'm going to school the next day."

Her words really struck a chord with me.

How can two lives differ so markedly? Fate? Coincidence? Unfortunate circumstances?

It's easy to forget how fortunate some of us are. It's hard to remember to be truly grateful for having been given that chance.

Perhaps it was this very insight that hit me.
