The crack in writing
I recently watched an interview with the Swedish-speaking Finnish author Monika Fagerholm, and something she said really stuck with me:
The better you get at writing, the better you also get at hiding things from yourself. That's why you have to find a crack.
It's an interesting thought, and I believe there's a lot of truth to it. When writing becomes routine, the therapeutic effect diminishes. The truth gets hidden behind the clouds of habit.
We need something to make those clouds burst and let the light of truth shine through. Perhaps by writing about something unfamiliar. It might feel uncomfortable, which in itself might be a sign of us touching the truth.
