Creativity can't be forced

For the last couple of weeks, there’s been so much I’ve wanted to write. So much that it’s been hard finding the time to do it.

Now, it feels like I have nothing to write. And that’s fine.

It’s only recently I’ve truly realized something about writing, or any other creative endeavor. A simple truth: creativity isn’t constant, and it can’t be forced.

Quite obvious when you think about it, but easy to forget. At least it is for me.

I expect it to show up when I call for it. I know it’s in me, so I should be able to pull it out like a rabbit from a hat whenever I want the magic.

That’s how things usually work, right? You’re hungry, you eat. You’re thirsty, you drink. You’re tired, you sleep.

But creativity doesn’t work like that. You can’t force it. The more you grasp for it, the less likely you are to get a hold of it. It’s like a mysterious fog that vanishes the moment you reach out to grab it.

All we can do is stay open to it. Offer a standing invitation and be patient...

And when this creative fuel shows up, our vessel is ready for the journey. When the tank’s been filled, we grab the wheel.

And it’s up to us to decide the destination.
