No electricity, no problem

Making coffee

I found a cool little coffee shed today.

You hardly noticed it when passing by. It melted into the vegetation. A few plastic stools and a handwritten piece of cloth, probably cut from an old bed sheet, were all that hinted there might be a business here.

The owner explained that she didn’t have electricity. She didn’t seem to mind at all. Just happily grinding away while chitchatting with the customers, all the time with a huge smile on her face.

I ordered a cappuccino and it was delicious, even compared to the many fancier cafés here in Chiang Mai. I sat down and enjoyed the no electricity experience, which of course also meant no wifi.

When I was paying, I had to ask about the price twice. I thought I’d misheard it. It cost 65 cents, which is really cheap even for Thailand. She explained the low price by saying:

“That way people can come every day if they like.”

Such a lovely way to look at it.

It seems to work too. I’m definitely in that group of people now. Already looking forward to my next visit.
