Just got home from a workout at the gym. After a bit of a break, it feels great to be back at it.
Strength training and yoga are my favorite forms of exercise. I’ve tried running, cycling, and more, but they’re really not my thing. There’s always an excuse readily available when I’ve tried them for a period.
Strength training and yoga, on the other hand, I look forward to. Not always, of course, but mostly. And those times when motivation wanes, but I still manage to get there, it feels like a fantastic victory afterward.
Since I enjoy these forms of exercise, the workouts almost always happen. The best workout is the one that gets done, as the saying goes.
I think it’s good to have the same mindset when it comes to certain creative activities, like writing.
We might have heard that creative writing is supposed to be beneficial, but we dislike it. Yet we continue to grind ourselves tired and weary. We might prefer to blog about today’s weather and what we ate for lunch, but we force ourselves to write deep texts about transience and the eternity of being.
We do it because it’s supposedly “the right thing to do.” But where’s the joy in that?
Don’t worry about which form of exercise is “best” or how one “should write.” Do what you like in the way you like. No one will thank you for forcing yourself into something that isn’t you.
When you find joy in the process, whether it’s lifting weights, writing a blog post, or building a shed, the sense of accomplishment is far greater — and so are the benefits.
