The freedom of less
"The birds outside the window are my Netflix."
That's how one woman, who chose to live without electricity or running water, described her simple life. She lives on as little money as possible, prioritizing time for the things she loves.
It's stories like hers that I find so liberating. While I wouldn't necessarily embrace such an extreme lifestyle myself, I'm deeply drawn to the underlying idea.
It's astonishing the amount of time and money we spend on things we could easily live without. The technology that was supposed to liberate us has, in some ways, become our prison.
Technology itself isn't inherently bad, of course. The problem lies in our often immoderate use of it.
We often find ourselves juggling multiple apps for tasks like notes and planning, when perhaps one well-chosen tool would suffice. And how many streaming services are we subscribed to? Do we really need all of those running simultaneously?
I believe we would all benefit from living a little more simply and focusing more on what is truly important in life – more time for meaningful connections, more space for creativity, and more peace of mind.
Our lives would be richer on all levels.
Update: Someone asked me for a link to the story. It’s in Swedish: Off grid-Johanna lever utan el och rinnande vatten.
