Internet ruined everything

A client told me he used to run a business that sent out paper booklets filled with coupons and offers to different companies.

“But then,” he said, “the Internet came along and ruined everything.”

And now we’re in the AI era. You can pretty much divide people’s reactions into two groups:

But the fact remains — it’s here, and it’s not going away. Nor should it.

It’s still early days for AI, and things will keep changing, just like they did with file sharing and streaming services. Some changes will be “good” and others “bad,” depending on whether you’re a praiser or a panicker.

At the end of the day, it’s not AI, file sharing, or even the invention of the telephone that’s the problem. It’s our fear of change. That’s the real obstacle behind so many issues in society.

And yet, we live in a world that never stops changing. We wouldn’t even be here without the universal magic of change and adaptation. It’s always been this way — and always will be.

The Greek philosopher Heraclitus recognized it a few thousand years ago:

The only constant in life is change.
