Start writing

What’s a good way to start a blog post?

Maybe by asking a question, like I just did. Or perhaps with a thought-provoking quote. Or why not share a personal story as an analogy.

Classic safe bets. They all work fine, but not always. They all have one thing in common: there needs to be an idea about the rest of the content.

If you don’t know what to write about, they won’t be of much help. No matter how many great intro tricks you have up your sleeve, you still need some sort of idea for the rest of the text.

Instead of waiting for that aha moment to arrive, I suggest doing the opposite. Start writing even when you have no idea what to write about. More often than not, it really helps.

I do it all the time. Same thing with this post. It started with this:

Nothing published yesterday, let’s see what happens today. Maybe another try with the ideas I had a couple of days ago? Hmm... nah. Boring. Okidoki. Nothing, nothing... Ooh, maybe that’s it. I’ll try...

That’s literally how this post was born.

No ideas whatsoever. Just writing nonsense without a plan. No goal, no pressure. Just writing.

If you’re feeling stuck, give it a try. You might be surprised how well it actually works. You might find that the answer to the initial question simply is:

Start writing.
